ABOUT US

Bombay Chaat House, also known as Indian Chaat House, is one of Portland's favorite destinations for tasty, authentic Indian food. Our menu is extensive and includes many traditional  favorites as well as some harder-to-find dishes.  We take pride in our use of the best quality, hand-ground Indian spices and in the freshness of all of our ingredients.  BCH is located in Downtown Portland, on South West 12th and Yamhill St. It's just two blocks from Multnomah County Library. You will enjoy our attentive service almost as much as our tantalizing menu.

Our History

“India Chaat House,” was our second location opened in this same parking lot ( 804 SW 12th Ave & Yamhill.  Portland, OR, 97005) thanks to Avtar’s dream of always wanting to cook for people. Avtar’s Brother helped her open
India Tandoori Oven on SE 2nd and Main St. in 1999. It served meat and veggie dishes.  Avtar did not like to cook meat as she was vegetarian, and it was sold. She decide to open on 12th & Yamhill in the year 2000.  She named it India Chaat House as she wanted it to be a new Beginning. A new beginning it was, our Loyal costumers enjoyed our food so much they did not mind commuting from Hillsboro, Graham, Salem and even Washington.

From the year 2000 to present, we have been in that same spot.

What's is this Famous Food cart War Story I hear about?

In October 2008, Daljit Singh filed for a divorce from Avtar Kaur. Knowing that Avtar would not go to court to fight the divorce, Daljit knew he could use this to take Avtar’s business. Throughout the divorce process Avtar tried to reason with Daljit. “I have been going to work and giving you the money every day” she said “I will not go to court for money. I am ill, I need you right now. I have cancer, gallbladder stones, and blood clots. If you want to leave me for my illness, if you feel I am not worth anything more than a slave- then you can freely go. Once you give me a divorce you won’t be welcome back. Think about what you are doing. I promise you, I won’t go to court. God provided for me until today, he will surely provide for me in the future.” Daljit did not listen, and instead used this to take advantage of her. He lied to the court and said that Avtar had a restaurant called Chaat For You (which did not exist), in addition to the food cart. The judge believed him, and gave him the food card- India Chaat House, leaving Avtar with no job. On top of all this Daljit took out a loan against their house for more than its value, and then gave that house, loan and all, to Avtar pay off. He used the money to buy a more expensive piece of property, leaving Avtar to pay extra for her house, while he had a property she was paying for. On top of this, Avtar was left jobless.

Seeing all of this happen, Avtar and Daljit’s sons (Harvey and Amritpal) decided to try and set things right. Harvey opened up a new business called Bombay Chaat House, right in front of his dad’s in January, 2009. Daljit responded by filing restraining orders against Harvey, Avtar and Amritpal the next day, saying that they were trying to kill him. The judge realized that Daljit’s allegations were false, and for the first time the judicial system failed him. He could no longer use it to keep Avtar away from work. Knowing he could not compete with the new Bombay Chaat House, Daljit sold his cart to a man named Mike, saying that Bombay Chaat House was going to be removed from the scene. Mike was lied to. Mike then sold it off to a new owner the next year, then in 2011 it was offered to Harvey. Harvey took out a loan from the bank, and bought back India Chaat House, so that his mother would have her old name back. The cart is now known as India Chaat house and Bombay Chaat House, and is operated by Avtar, Harvey, and Amritpal.
